A very short drive by ferry from the mainland of Krabi province lies Ko Lanta Yai. Ko Lanta Yai is popular holiday destination like Khao Lak for families and couples seeking a more peacefull and trouble free area. Long beaches with smaller hotels and resorts, mostly family runned are distributed along the beaches. Beside swimming, sun bathing and smaller tourist attractions such as elephant riding or jungle trekking, diving is the main atraction.
Krabi is the main town in Krabi province and got its own airport. The two main holiday areas are Ao Nang Beach to the west and the little peninsula of Railay Beach. Both little villages are very popular among backpakers and rock climbers alike. Many limestone mountains offer a spectacular scenic view of the area.
Krabi and Ko Lanta are a melting pot of Buddhists, Thai-Chinese, Muslims and even sea gypsies. The majority of the population in the rural areas is Muslim. The area however, does not suffer from any religious tension and the folk live in peace and harmony.
